Water Margin is a classic Chinese novel that takes place during the Song Dynasty. It's a story I grew up with, and it's always been a big inspiration to me. I remember my mother watching the tv drama adaptation, and I can still sing the song in the ending credits
One day, I came up with an idea to do a story loosely-based (very, very loosely) on WM. It's still heavily under development, and at the moment exists as a back-burner project since I have PT and work to focus on. The project would also require lots and lots of research
The character pictured is based on "Lin Chong," the "Panther-faced General" who betrays the corrupted kingdom for the safety of his wife. He's one of the primary characters in WM, and my all-time favorite next to Lu Zhishen. I'd probably make Lin Chong the main character in this project if it ever happens He was also the first guy in my last sketchdump. Toldja you'd see more of him in a bit! ://D
The next chunk of text is background information/thematic elements that I'm writing down mainly for my safe keeping, but feel free to read, if you're interested in my process! Or whatever weird stuff goes on in my mind xD
-Setting and Influences- -Far Eastern Fantasy/Steampunk. -Pulling historical influence from the late Ching Dynasty (rather than the Song Dynasty), for the introduction of industrial technology without losing the cultural flavor. (I've also always wanted to use the half-shaven head and braid look for a hero) -Ignoring all typical steampunk aesthetics (especially Victorian culture and overuse of gears/antique themes), but keeping the technological "what ifs" of steam-powered robotics.
-Basic story premise- -A loyal general loses his wife to a corrupted Palace official, and begins a rebellion against an already-crumbling Kingdom. -Technological encroachment, "new vs old" -Avoid "west vs east," too many Ching Dynasty stories are about that, and I don't want to villainize the western world anymore than it already has been LOL
-Characters- -Ling Chong -Lu Zhishen -Gao Yanei -Gao Qiu -debating against using all 108 characters.
Sorry, idea vomiting, feel free to ignore all this LOL

WATER MARGIN!!! Oh my god, I love you even more now. Water Margin + steampunk + you = amazingness. Forgive me if I sound like a creeper.
PS: Yesssssssss, all 108! Or at least most of them...they're all too badass not to. It's funny, actually. A couple years back I was toying with the idea of using the Water Margin characters in a story, along with all the heroes from other countries, like Greek myths.
fo' realz. Same here! I was searching it on dA a while back and was depressed when there was almost no art dedicated to any of the classics (except for the Romance of Three Kingdoms of course).
Bamf character design, and the details of the clothing/skin are mesmerizing to stare at ffguuuh. There's a lot of depth in it even if it's still sketchy looking. The red strings wrapping around his hair is a nice touch. The splotch of lighter gray really makes him stand out. You always provide so much information, it's very helpful! Now I want to read/watch this series ahaha
thanks so much dude! I was actually worried the red strings was too much, glad to hear it. And ahhh, you make me feel so happy about being long-winded LOL <333
*gives you some aspirin* all these ideas and projects and characters and story lines and research and ideas and designs and development and ... *takes an aspirin too* just don't go brain-broke on us

I'm so happy someone likes the story as much as I do!
I might try at all 108...gosh, that'd be hard as fuck but super rewarding 8|

Hmm....so it would. On both accounts >8D
