YO, so the past 30 days I was fasting for Ramadan.
Ever since I was 21, I'd try to challenge myself to do something during Ramadan to improve myself. Either spiritually, physically, emotionally, and this year, artistically :)
Since Ramadan is exactly 30 days, and Bee already did this challenge, I thought it'd be the perfect thing. I originally wanted to do Monster Boys, but guys are my comfort zone, so I wanted to actually challenge myself to do more girls. A lot of them ended up androgynous as per my usual though =7=;
All in all, it was tough, but really rewarding!

Most of the monster girls were made up on the spot, and those were the ones that went into the last "Celebration" prompt.
But I'm gonna ramble a bit about any cameos, if anyone is interested!
    - Day 5's mermaid is Mallory from the Sam&Sara arc of Picture This. I always associate her with mermaids and water, so I thought it'd be really cool. I based her design off of my Safari picture, where she's inspired by the Emperor Angelfish.
    - Day 12 and 16's zombie and ghost are Morgan and Dominique from Romaine Hearts. RH has a lot of "undead" themes, and Mor has always been subtly zombie-themed (which is where all the stitches and string in her visual motifs come from). Dom was inspired by a Chinese Ghost called a Diao Si Gui, the ghost of someone hung to death.
    - Day 17 is my personification of my computer, Cynthia
    - Day 21's werewolf and Day 28's Group are Mint (werewolf..she shows up twice LOL), Ash (vampire), Autumn (banshee/ghost), and Ren (grim reaper), from SalaDays
    - Day 22's Feline girl is Kye from my Avatar fan-story, re-imagined as a Bakeneko (if she were in the SalaDays universe)
    - Day 24's multi-armed girl is Aseri, from my unnamed fantasy world project. The magic in that world is all elemental, and if anyone taps too deep into their magic, it starts to take them over, turning them into an elemental. Seri's element is wood, focusing on bark and growth, and I wanted to use a lot of Hindu imagery for her elemental state since her nation is based on traditional Thai culture.
    - Day 26 is not my character, its' Morrigan from Dark Stalkers! One of my top fav monster girls ever :D
    - Day 28's monster girl couple is my undine Sym (I haven't drawn her in forever, so have a link to Bee's gallery. A newer picture is in Bee's Monster Girl Challenge too), and Bee's witch Addison. Yes they're an item in Bee's WWP branch, White Outlines.

These can also be found on Tumblr in three chunks: [1/3] [2/3] [3/3]

I'll also be cleaning up the two Romaine Hearts and SalaDays pictures to post individually later :)

AND THAT'S ALL FOLKS.
CAN YOU..PICK A FAVORITE?

And Eid Mubarak to any of my Muslim fans!

I am doing a very similar challenge. Though I noticed something...almost all of these are Yokai...which had its own day. Apart from that, awesome work.

I have been reading up on in for hours. Yokai are everything. bigfoot, vampires, Godzilla, kitsune, tunuki are all yokai. Talking animals, possessed household item, supernatural occurrence. It's a term, like Manga that encompasses many things and genres. Only westerners limit it's meaning. I have not found a single source to say otherwise

Also this is a running challenge for a lot of artists and the categories weren't made up by me. So go find the original creator to show off your hours-long yokai study or something, shit

Japanese speakers using Yokai to describe monster IN THEIR LANGUAGE is one thing, but what you're doing is a simple translation while ignoring the fact when using the term "Yokai" in an English context it's specifically referencing their rich culture.
Yes its a general term for "monster," but don't homogenize Japanese mythos with other cultures, yeah? Yokai have a specific Japanese heritage and misusing the term so generally is something only Westerners do, holy shit.

Japanese do it. They don't have a word for American comic books, they call them Manga. Someone should tell them to stop missusing the term so generally. It's usually westerners who anti-appropriate terms because they think words in other languages only apply to that culture. Like the people who say a non-Japanese person wearing kimono is racist are usually westerners.

and look, before you come back with more uneducated stuff you know nothing about, the point is America is a multi-cultural country with Japanese-descended people. The use of their culture effects them in ways that native Japanese don't experience. Native Japanese people can use their language on imported things, but Americans typically try to keep a cultural integrity of where the media is coming from, therefore using "anime/manga"
In America, you don't run around pointing at Superman going "this is manga" because no, it's not. Manga means "comic," practically everyone knows that. "Yokai" means "monsters, many many people know that.
But in Western media, do we have kasa-obake? No. So we use Yokai because it's keeping the integrity of that monster's culture. Do we have Oni? No. So we use Yokai or just straight up Oni because there is something SPECIAL about that monster and the culture it's from that separates it from English-speaking countries

Don't try to erase Japanese culture and its influence because you know what "Yokai" translates to in English

Having an understanding of another culture is not trying to erase it. My understanding of Japanese culture comes from first and second hand interaction with native Japanese. I try and learn the terms of other languages because I believe the western world simplifying or condensing the terms does more harm than good. yokai is not one type of thing, yet you are telling me to use it as such. Yokai doesn't mean one type of mosnter, so I wouldn't use it to define one type of Monster. I would prefer to use all the terms of the subtypes of spirits, ghosts, demons and all things supernatural. "White person, just use this word" "that white person doesn't use that word right, racist". I apologize for expanding my understanding of a foreign culture. I would love to see western culture embrace eastern culture and have kada-obake, rokuro-kubi or inugam and other elements of the culture. Japanese, Indian, Korean and Chinese movies have tonnes of new and unexplored ideas, themes and elements that could reinvigorate Hollywood. At the same time western techniques and stories have lead to amazing innovations and creations in eastern cinematic culture. This sharing of ideas could be used in comic, game and other media formats to the same result.

Don't put words in my mouth. I said "do not erase the cultural history of Japanese monsters." I'm not saying Yokai are one type of thing.
If your original critique was about how the category of Yokai on this set of prompts was too general and vague, then yeah I'd agree because there are hundreds of different Japanese monsters. But no, you were trying to conglomerate all types of monsters because you read a wikipedia article about Yokai and wanted to be a know-it-all TO AN ASIAN AMERICAN. YES TEACH ME ALL ABOUT MY OWN CULTURE AND MY SISTER CULTURES.

Anyway, don't expect anymore replies. I don't care how many "native Japanese people" you claim to know, the fact you're accessorizing them (if they even exist) to prove your validity is super gross and I have more important things to do than entertain you.
Also I really don't know how to continue this conversation with someone who keeps misspelling all the monsters he claims to be studying
"Kasa-obake" and "inugami," thanks gweilo

I said "in an english context"
I'm an American Asian, I know what I'm talking about, and yes, Japanese Americans think non-Japanese wearing kimonos are racist. Western Japanese, sure, but the context is wildly different

I love this piece so much due to the fact that even though these are monsters, you still manage to make the real and attractive, which is more then I can say for Hexamous who just gives his women balloons in their chest and calls it a day. But I just have to ask you what is the yokai and the headless knight in armor. out of all the unique and original characters you've compiled in this list, it's only those two that I have never herd of. Never the less, this is nothing short of a master piece. I will be looking into your gallery more often.

Thanks for the info. I have heard of an Oni and a Tengu by looking up Japanese mythology for a project in middle school. I do love the kabuki mask. I kinda always wanted one.

Thanks man!

A Yokai is an umbrella term for Japanese demons. In my interpretation, I decided to put two specific demons together, the Oni and the Tengu.
The Dullahan is an Irish fairy-demon, basically the "headless horseman" from popular culture.

This is so incredible.  Found your page looking for cyberpunk character artwork inspiration and I have to say I'm blown away by this.  Very, very well done.

As far as favorites go, I've gotta say that Yokai is awesome, but the True Monster will likely haunt the deeper corners of my brain for a while.  Thanks for the cool inspiration and awesome work!

Something I love about your art is that you aren't afraid to get gruesome. You aren't afraid to push boundaries. And it shows in something like this that just... amazes me. I bow to you.

A favorite? HAH. DO ALL OF THEM COUNT? Because I really don't know if I can pick a favorite. There was too much jaw-dropping involved when I went through these for me to choose a favorite. Ty, you are AMAZING.
